About Us
After a highly successful debut in fall of 2025, the Schubertiade Salon Series is launching its second season with four concerts, featuring Schubert's sublime music performed by distinguished musicians from metropolitan Vancouver. Our 2026-2027 season will be presenting three concerts in the chancel of the beautiful Christ Church Cathedral in Downtown Vancouver, and at the intimate York Place Musical Salon on Vancouver Island.
Schubert was a highly prolific composer, as he bestowed a rich legacy of 600 songs, 9 symphonies, 14 piano sonatas, as well as a fine collection of chamber music compositions. Despite his supreme musical gifts, he lived under the shadow of Beethoven, and his music was only appreciated by a close circle of friends, artists , intellectuals and patrons. In order to champion Schubert's musical genius, his supporters began organizing informal musical performances/soirees in the salons of various Viennese patrons, often with the composer at the piano. A evening of Schubertiade typically included songs, chamber music, poetry reading, socializing and even dancing.
"My love for Schubert is a very serious one, probably just because it is not a fleeting fancy. Where is genius like his, which soars aloft so boldly and surely, where we then see the first few enthroned? To me he is like a child of the gods, who plays with Jupiter's thunder, albeit also occasionally handling it oddly. But he plays in such a region, at such a height, to which the others are far short of raising themselves..."
